So you're learning Chinese...
Great! Ask any linguist and they'll tell you there are three critical languages to know in this century: Chinese, English, and Spanish (alphabetical order there!). Learning Chinese isn't just a great idea because of the crazy long and rich history and culture of the place, or the 900 million speakers of Mandarin in China. There are Chinese speakers in practically every single country in the world. It is truly a world language.
But Chinese is really hard, right? Actually... not so much. Did you know, for example, that Chinese grammar is almost exactly the same as English? And... (drum roll) verbs do not change form for gender, tense, or- any reason at all! A huge relief for anyone who has tried to learn a European language, where memorizing verb conjugations is one of the big hurdles. Of course, there are the tones. But I promise you that after a bit of practice they'll seem quite natural. And then the characters- but you can gradually ease into those while learning to speak. And besides, Chinese characters are fascinating and fun. They're part of the reason Chinese is so cool and different.

Pleco is one of the treasured possessions of every student of Chinese language at any level. There is a free version but I highly recommend you get the basic full version. In addition to a great dictionary, it includes Chinese OCR (optical character recognition) software. Run across a character you can't quite remember? Just point your phone at it and presto! (or pleco!) it gives you the definition and pronunciation. How cool is that? You can also make instant flashcards from any characters you find and the program will test you on them using settings you choose.
Hellotalk is social media specifically for language learning. You can browse "moments" posted in your target language, listen in on and participate in live podcasts by native speakers, and much more. Have a question about a Chinese assignment? Post it in your Moments and you'll quickly have multiple helpful replies from native Chinese speakers. Highly recommended app for students who are serious about learning Chinese!
After you've learned a hundred or so characters you can really start to make good use of this app. TCB offers real news stories, but modified to fit your level. You can choose articles for levels 1 through 6+ on the HSK scale (sort of like China's TOEFL).
